Texas City Felony Records
Texas cities do not have their own criminal courts. All felony cases are handled by the District Court in the county where the offense took place. If you live in Houston, your felony case goes through the Harris County District Court. If you live in Dallas, it goes through the Dallas County District Court. The city name tells you where to start, but the county is what matters for finding the right court and records office. Below are the major Texas cities covered by this guide. Each city page tells you which county handles felony records, where the courthouse is, how to search for cases, and what resources are available locally.
The District Clerk in each county keeps the actual felony case files. This includes all charging documents, docket entries, plea records, verdicts, and sentencing orders. For residents of large Texas cities, the District Clerk's office is often in the county courthouse located downtown. Many large counties also run their own online search portals so you can look up case information without going to the courthouse in person.
Texas also offers statewide access through the re:SearchTX portal at research.txcourts.gov. This system pulls court data from all 254 counties and lets you search by party name or cause number across the entire state. It works for residents of any Texas city and is a good starting point if you are not sure which county court handled a case. For statewide criminal history including arrests and dispositions, the Texas DPS operates the Computerized Criminal History (CCH) system at dps.texas.gov.
For offenders currently in state prison or on state supervision, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice runs a public offender search at offender.tdcj.texas.gov. This tool covers felony offenders statewide and does not require you to know which county handled the case. It is useful for residents of any Texas city who need to locate information about an offender in the state correctional system.
